There’s been plenty of research over the years about the benefits of storytelling on children, including enhanced imagination, improved vocabulary and refined communication skills. However, books can also be a powerful tool for helping children to process the big changes they’ll experience in their young lives - one of which is starting nursery school.
With a changeup in their routine and having to be surrounded by many new faces, starting nursery can be a daunting prospect for your child. To help them feel more at ease, we’ve rounded up the best books about starting nursery - just in time for back to school season!
1. Hugless Douglas Goes to Little School, David Melling
This warm hug of a book works well for nursery and preschool starters, especially those who are already familiar with the beloved Hugless Douglas. It’s focused less on the routine of a day at nursery school, and more on the fun your children will have with their new friends - putting a positive spin on a big, scary new start.
2. First Day at Bug School, Sam Lloyd
This school-starting book stands out for its bright, funny illustrations and rhyming text, and goes into easy to understand detail about the routine of a day at nursery - right down to going to the toilet. The map-like bird’s eye view of the school on the inside covers is also a helpful touch, allowing you to show your child all of the different rooms that might be inside a nursery, and what they’re all for.
3. I’m Starting Nursery, Big Steps
This sturdy, ‘lift the flap’ book is a fun but reassuring read for nursery starters. It’s well-designed for the 2-year old age range and takes your child through a typical day at nursery school - from hanging their coat up to playing with toys, having a snack, listening to stories and going home. There are also some great tips for parents included, too!
4. I Have to Start School Today, Simon Philip & Ged Adamson
For particularly anxious children, this is an excellent choice. The girl in the story keeps thinking of all the strange (and funny) things that could happen when she starts school - from the rhino who will block the school gate to the bear who will take her chair. It takes her sweet, wise granny to reassure her that the rhino and the bear may actually be quite nice - naturally, they do!
